Everything has an app now, and none of them work.
The parking meter wants an account. The lightbulb needs a password. The coffee maker is waiting for permission to update. I would like the button back.
There was a time when you pushed a button and the machine understood that this was the complete transaction. No email address. No six-digit code. No opportunity to “personalize the experience.” The button had one job and, with admirable professionalism, did it.
Now every object in the house is apparently building a relationship with me. I do not want a relationship with the thermostat. I want it to make the room warmer without collecting my birthday.
